Hymn to St. Cecilia was written on Britten's voyage home from America to England, in 1942. New York Customs had lost the first section, so he had to rewrite it from memory. The piece was first performed St. Cecilia's Day in 1942 (Britten's twenty-ninth birthday). The text consists of three poems by Auden.

Also dating from this American period is Hymn to St Cecilia for chorus, Britten and Auden's exquisite paean to the patron saint of musicians, and a proposed Christmas Oratorio about which Britten and Auden corresponded until the mid-1940s but which was an impracticable text for musical setting, being simply far too long.

Hymn to St. Cecilia (2017) Daniel J. Knaggs, composer

The Hymn to St Cecilia. marks a turning point in Britten's life.. He was returning home physically when he wrote it, albeit to an uncertain future, planning to register as a conscientious objector in wartime Britain, but he was also making a musical return to choral music after a gap of several years - as well as St Cecilia, he began working on the Ceremony of Carols during the voyage home.
